Venetian islands

  Tour

Contemplating the Venetian islands by bicycle

By bike, from our beloved Riviera del Brenta, you can easily reach the port of Fusina and embark to visit the bikeable Venetian islands. Boats welcome visitors on bicycles, the ideal means to fully appreciate the scenic beauty of Pellestrina and the uniqueness of Lido.

Pellestrina is nature and culture by bicycle

On board, even before disembarking at the small port of San Pietro in Volta, the encounter with Pellestrina and with the peace and tranquility it knows how to transmit begins. It is the island of pristine beaches and colorful houses, which form a rainbow that is reflected in the lagoon, creating a magical effect in the eyes of every observer.
In Pellestrina, man has not yet built invasively and the island has remained the scene of shots of everyday life: housewives sitting in front of the doorway intent on working the typical bobbin lace or fishermen returning from a boat trip, young people diving into the lagoon from the shore for a refreshing swim or waiters serving excellent fish dishes at tables along the lagoon.
First you'll pedal along the quiet of a well-marked bike path through tiny hamlets to the island's thinnest point, then along the characteristic Murazzi, the imposing white Istrian stone dike that Venice built in the late 1700s to defend the banks and lagoon from high tides and erosion. It was the last major work of the Venetian Republic before its fall in 1797.
Continuing on you will reach the nature reserve of Cà Roman, a green area where the extremely rich flora and fauna that inhabit it rule.

Pedaling through the history of the island of Pellestrina

Inhabited since the origins of Venice and its islands, Pellestrina was destroyed and depopulated after the Chioggia War. It was the Doge Andrea Contarini, in the second half of the 14th century, who started the reconstruction by introducing some families from nearby Chioggia with surnames still present on the island today: the Busetto, Vianello, Scarpa and Zennaro families.
The Pellestrina Island Museum, a small but interesting exhibit of the Southern Lagoon, traces the history and tells through pictures the characteristic Murazzi and the terrible flood of '66.

Venice Lido's thin island traveled by bike

After a short sail, you will arrive at the Venice Lido, on one of the best-known islands in the Venetian Lagoon. It will be a fascinating experience to pedal along the thin tongue of land that divides the sea from the lagoon. Like the other Venetian islands, Lido is quiet and peaceful.
The free beaches of San Nicolò to the north and Alberoni to the south with their characteristic ancient sand dunes host bathers eager to relax to the gentle sound of the water on the shore.

Although well known and well frequented during the summer periods, Lido is nonetheless off the beaten path of mass tourism and offers the opportunity to spend a pleasant day outdoors by biking along the cycle path that runs through it. You will be able to admire the beauty of the Art Nouveau palaces and villas and the majesty of the Murazzi. You will have the opportunity to visit the very old Jewish Cemetery founded in the second half of the 14th century and the Casino Palace, home of the Venetian gambling house until the late 1990s.

Lido: from military outpost to "Golden Island"

During the history of the Republic of Venice, theisland of Lido was adopted as a military outpost and the few inhabitants were concentrated in the small village of Malamocco.

After the fall of the Serenissima, until the second half of the nineteenth century, it was mostly an area cultivated with vegetable gardens, but a destination for important people such as Goethe and Lord Byron, who chose it for its beaches.

It was the beginning of increasing attendance by theEuropean and American aristocracy and wealthy bourgeoisie.

The island underwent a transformation and was renamed theGolden Island.

The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw the construction of splendid Art Nouveau villas, the Cinema Palace, and monumental hotels that welcomed the international jet set during the Belle Époque period.
