Brenta Riviera

  Tour

Cycling among the ancient Venetian Villas

During your bike ride along the Riviera del Brenta let yourself be enchanted by the extraordinary concentration of Venetian Villas. You will visit an area of high historical and scenic interest that runs along the Naviglio del Brenta, or the stretch of the Brenta between the town of Stra and its original mouth at Fusina.

Riding a bicycle will be exciting to pedal through the places on the mainland where Venetian nobles loved to spend their days.

Decide in complete freedom the timing of your bike tour and make a stop to visit some of the numerous villas of the Riviera del Brenta that welcome you by opening the gates of their centuries-old gardens and revealing the wonder of their frescoed rooms. You will be able to meet directly with the owners, direct descendants of ancient Venetian noble families who, in telling you family stories, will be able to convey local history and culture better than anyone else.

The century-old history of the Riviera del Brenta

Beginning in the 15th century, the Venetians began to reclaim and organize this vast area, realizing its productive potential. The wealthiest Venetian families began to invest in farms, and the first mansions were built to accommodate the wealthy owners , who hired famous architects such as Longhena, Frigimelica, Sansovino, and the celebrated Andrea Palladio.
The concept of the ancient "Roman villas," rich country houses of classical taste similar to real secular temples, was rediscovered. The majestic dwelling was located in the center of a large estate and included the "barchessa," a rural service building in which servants and laborers lived and in which kitchens, stables and other rustic outbuildings were organized.

Later, in addition to serving as the administrative headquarters of the farm, the building became to all intents and purposes the holiday home, and thus the "Villa," which was meant to reflect the importance of the owner family. Here they were enriched with splendid frescoes and spectacular gardens.

Unfortunately, in the nineteenth century, after the fall of the Venetian Republic, heavy taxes on luxury forced owners in many cases to cover the frescoes with lime and, in the worst cases, to demolish the villas themselves.
Despite this, to this day, the architectural heritage of villas and gardens is remarkable and remains as a reminder of the Serenissima's glorious past on the mainland.
